Understanding people's motivation is one of the top priority challenges that leaders and managers face today. This becomes vitally important because people's commitment, performance and satisfaction are directly linked to their inspiration and motive.

Taking into account that we are all different, this great challenge involves deepening our understanding of the most important component of organizations: its people.

The people and its motivators

Going directly into motivation, it is worth making a distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; the first being the one that is related to those internal desires of people, and the second to the external aspects (bonuses, prizes, comments, etc.)

Moving Motivators is a Management 3.0 practice that is found in the "Energize people” module and that, through card games and the CHAMPFROGS model, focuses on knowing and deepening the motivational aspects of the members of each team.

The put into practice

In this case, the practice was facilitated in a remote team geographically distributed in different countries in LATAM . That is why, to implement it, we used the real-time collaboration tool, Miro.

The first step consisted of explaining the content of the cards displayed on the board:

Then, each participant had 8 minutes to read all the cards and, according to the priority of their motivations, set them from left to right.

At the end of the time-box, each participant shared their choices with the other team mates.

The insights

To sum up, it was surprising to observe the enthusiasm of the participants in this activity as well as to be able to confirm that each team member is unique.

However, once the exercise is finished, general data can be obtained and grouped with the coincidences among their choices, as well as identify the values that were not picked, and based on this, manage the system accordingly.

The 10 cards of the CHAMPFROGS model are as follows:

  • Curiosity: I have many things to investigate and think about.

  • Honor: I am proud that my personal values are reflected in the way I work.

  • Acceptance: The people around me approve of what I do and who I am.

  • Mastery: My work challenges my competence but is still within my capabilities.

  • Power: There is enough space for me to influence what happens around me.

  • Freedom: I am independent from others in my work and my responsibilities.

  • Relationship: I have good social contacts with people at work.

  • Order: There are enough rules and policies for a stable environment.

  • Goal: My purpose in life is reflected in the work I do.

  • Status: My position is good and recognized by the people who work with me.

The main objective of the practice is that each person on the team can set the cards according to their motivational preferences, and at the same time, get to know those of the people on the team.
